What is a Bitcoin Ordinal and Why are Ordinals Important?

Bitcoin is the most well known digital or virtual currency that operates on a decentralized network called the blockchain to record all transactions in a secure and transparent manner. It’s renowned for its unparalleled security, decentralization, and high value.

Bitcoins are composed of digital units called satoshis, named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator (or creators) of Bitcoin.

Now here's the cool part. Bitcoin Ordinals are satoshis which have been minted and integrated with a unique piece of digital information. Unlike Ethereum NFTs, an Ordinal isn’t stored on a server and linked, via a “hash” to a blockchain, it’s actually part of the Bitcoin blockchain itself. As a result, ordinals represent unique, ordered positions on the blockchain, akin to rare 'digital real estate' on Bitcoin's blockchain.

What makes Ordinals unique and game-changing technology is that each Ordinal can be identified and tracked throughout the Bitcoin blockchain. The benefits of recursion, composability, immutability and provenance all allow for the creation and tracking of digital assets solidifying the authenticity and lineage of each asset.
