I hate to say it, but y'all are again over-focussing on future state with all this strategic and tactical talk, whether in a research or design context. It's like the hive mind has learned a new thing and the entire herd is now lurching.

One of the biggest failings in our Digital house is our inability to build foundational knowledge and standards. Defined roles and titles. Commonly understood process. Universal definitions.

Without these foundations and common standards, everything is subjectively interpreted with unpredictable and often random levels of success and failure

GETTING GOOD AT THE BASICS BEFORE MOVING FORWARD WITH ADVANCED THINKING IS NOT JUST GOOD PRACTICE, IT'S ESSENTIAL

I don't need to make crass analogies about shaky house foundations, but that's what we do, constantly. We build on shaky foundations and wonder why entire sections of the house fall down or why people often don't see the value in the house (and some actually raze them to the floor).

This desperate need for new and next isn't going to drive the money and success that everyone wants. It just perpetuates fear and anxiety and more redundancies.

Talking strategic and tactical when the leadership of product and practice is so subjective is a complete waste of time and a distraction from the core issues that will move the needle and improve lives and profits.

IF YOU'RE NOT BEING USER CENTRIC, TACTICAL AND STRATEGIC ARE COMPLETELY POINTLESS CONCEPTS because you're driving off into the distance in the wrong direction without no clue.

Put the user centric foundations in and then you can try advanced and exotic things, but until then, running before you can walk ends up in a very public faceplant. 

Getting the basics right, spending time getting those confidence building foundations in place, takes a bit longer but you will grow in the right direction, faster and with much more success and happiness.

Neglect to build those foundations and you spend the rest of your career either avoiding or arguing against the things that you didn't build. Invest in yourself, slow down, get the basics embedded in various contexts and then push forwards with confidence.

I don't expect this to be a popular post because it isn't what people want to hear, they want to hear about the next big thing. The best UXers are focussing on building their practices, not looking to the next thing.
