he Job Search Struggle is Real, But Don't Lose Hope

A recent Twitter thread sparked my interest in UX design portfolio, Feedback and job process. The original tweet stated: "After going through a lot of portfolios today, I can understand why hiring managers don’t get back to you." Ouch. True, a strong portfolio is essential, but this lacks empathy.

This prompted a response: "She thinks it's by portfolio. Check FAANG designers and you'll be wondering how some of them got the job there. lmao..." Shots fired! A bit snarky, but raises a point – even at top companies, portfolios aren't the whole story.

I believe anyone applying for a UX design job needs worthy feedback else they won't know where they are failing at." YES! This is the heart of the issue.

Here are my thoughts:

👉🏽 Portfolios matter… a lot. It's your professional calling card.

👉🏽 Feedback is pure gold. It fuels improvement. Hiring managers, if you can't provide detailed critiques, at least offer a few pointers.

👉🏽 FAANG designers aren't immune to bad portfolios. Sometimes it's about connections, past projects, or sheer luck.

👉🏽Meanwhile, it's disheartening for applicants when they put in effort to personalise their portfolio and application but receive no response whatsoever. The high volumes make everything understandable, yet it still makes you wonder what else you can do to make it better. Despite its importance, constructive criticism is frequently absent.

👉🏽 Let's ditch the negativity. Mocking others doesn't help anyone. We all had beginner portfolios once!
