Thought for the Night

Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher in the Ionian culture, in 6th century BCE said, "No man ever steps in the same river twice, because it is not the same river, and he is not the same man." 

Similarly, the Baha'i faith, a religion in Iraq that was founded in the 19th century, teaches us that human society and culture are forever changing and evolving and that humanity must continue to adapt to changes. Additionally, the Sumerian culture, which flourished between 4100 and 1750 BCE and located in Southern Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq), believed in societal change. For instance, their cultural and spiritual ideologies emphasized ambition, success, honor, recognition, and prestige. In order to survive in a very desolate location, theory posits that the Sumerians took inventions and implemented them on a much bigger scale. Their inventions changed the world. As an example, they pushed the boundaries carrying humanity into recorded history, rather than pre-history. Another example would be their creation of the concept of a 24-hour day and being the first humans to live in cities. 

These ideologies and culture heritages say a lot. Change is always constant. We're not changing, evolving, and growing unless we're doing something in life. If we sit still and do nothing, are we changing? Are we growing? Are we adapting? In essence, change is necessary for us. Charles Darwin might have been right all along. 

Challenge for the night: Reflect on what changes you need to make in your life. 

Action for the night: If you need to take action, do it now. Don't put it on hold. An old question asks that whether we wait 5 years to do something versus doing it now, where will we be in 5 years?
