Unknown 

Many times, throughout our lives, we are faced with the unknown. When we experience this uncertainty, it can create many things for us, such as worries and anxieties about the future. There are many factors that contribute to uncertainty, such as finances, global issues such as a pandemic or an epidemic, one’s health concerns, relationship troubles, and many more things not mentioned.

But when faced with uncertainty, I think it is important to have faith in the unknown. The lotus in Hinduism, symbolizes that even whilst rooted in mud, can still blossom. Having faith in the unknown is not about having a type of blind faith, but a type of faith that rests in wisdom, understanding, clarity, & knowledge.

Even though we can practice having faith in the unknown, these times of uncertainty can still pull & stretch our mindset, testing our level of faith, trust, & confidence. Thus, we are reminded in other religious texts that faith the size of a mustard seed can move a mountain. In recovery settings, it is said that “God can move a mountain, but you better bring a shovel.” Therefore, we are reminded of what Jacques Derrida once said that when we are faced with the unknown, decisions must be made which help to advance toward a better future, and a future which is not known nor that can be anticipated.

My question to you today is what are you going to do when faced with the unknown? My challenge to everyone is, as we go through our day, remember what Margaret Shepherd is often quoted with saying: “Sometimes your only available transportation is a leap of faith.”
