Cardinal Virtues: Justice

Justice, in accordance with Catholicism & its Catechism, is coined as a moral virtue that exists and “consists in the constant & firm will to give their due to God & neighbor.” It further states that when we act with justice toward our Higher Power, this form of justice is called justice of religion & when we act with justice toward others, we are acting in accordance with respecting everyone’s rights. We are establishing harmony in our relationships, promoting equity and the common good. How else does justice play out in our lives? 

Stoicism teaches us that when we are acting in the virtue of justice, we are treating everyone with respect and fairness. This might mean we are holding doors open for other people. It might mean that we simply use the terms “please” and “thank you.” It is as simple as implementing these behaviors in all of our affairs, big & small. 

From a Buddhist perspective, justice is about recognizing the inherent humanity in each of us. We all share this common trait. Regardless of race, gender, political identification, socioeconomics, geographical location, age, etc., we all experience some form of suffering. It is important to remember that what we say, think, and do impacts not just ourselves, but those around us, and things around us also impact our speech, thoughts, and behaviors. It is equally important for us to understand this, as until we do, change both internally and externally is difficult to achieve. Life is about striving for a collective change in the world, taking care of each other. 

My challenge to you is this – how are you going to practice justice today? Remember, there’s always somebody who is worse off than you are right now. Are you able to help them, whether you like them or not?
