“Humor has the potential to be a powerful tool of persuasion, but like any potent weapon (discursive or non-discursive) it should be used with caution” (Lisa Perks, 2012).

Lisa is right. Humor is a powerful tool for people. There are three main theories on why humor is so powerful. One is via the incongruity theory. This theory posits that enjoyment comes from that which is unexpected. We may find things humorous because it goes against previous experiences, cognitive frameworks, or expectations.

Another theory is coined the relief theory. This theory argues that enjoyment comes from the release of pent-up emotions. Raskin (1985) believed that laughter is a tool that helps break people free relief from “mental, nervous, and / or psychic energy & this ensures homeostasis after a struggle, tension, strain, etc.”

Last, the superiority theory, is one that says that laughing at the foolishness of others is an essential component of the humor experience (Keith-Spiegel, 1972).

Whichever theory fits for recovery, is neither here nor there. The question is, how is humor related to recovery, and can it benefit recovery? According to Lantana Recovery, laughter can help with easing feelings of anxiety, inducing a positive attitude & mindset, enhance one’s well-being, & decrease one’s perception of external & internal threats. Humor might contribute toward strengthening one’s immune system, increasing coping skills, improving personal relationships, quality of life, & many more things not listed here.

My challenge to you is this – remember Rule 62: Don’t take yourself so seriously today.
