~ Not Enough ~

Narcotics Anonymous’ belief is that to keep away from active addiction, is to not take that first drug or drink. “If you are like us, you know that one is too many and a thousand is never enough.”

How many times did we ever say to ourselves, or even to our friends or loved ones, “I’m just going have just one” or “I’m not going to be out late” or “Only a couple” yet we find ourselves using or drinking uncontrollably, over and over again? How many times did we ever truly control our use of said substances?

There’s a big difference between denial and a delusion. When we are living in denial, we know there’s a problem, yet we refuse to acknowledge the problem. However, when we are living in a delusion, we don’t see that there’s a problem. We are living a lie, and we don’t know it.

Remember, it’s the elusive feeling that happens when we use drugs or drink alcohol, that causes us to continue living in a state of delusion. This elusive feeling, coupled with this delusion that happens to us, I believe, allows us to continue drinking or drugging to the point where we don’t realize it is injurious. Yet, how do we break the cycle of the delusion?

We remember that “one is too many and a thousand is never enough.” If we don’t take the first drink or use the first drug, we don’t have to deal with the consequences that come because of our addiction (i.e., the hangovers, loss of employment, jails, institutions, financial disaster, etc.). We get to live a life of peace that we never knew existed. We get to live a life of happiness that we never experienced. We get to build relationships based on principles of true brotherhood or sisterhood.

My challenge to you is this – build a life that you want, and you will be amazed before you are halfway through.
