When a mosquito bites, it injects saliva containing anticoagulants and proteins, which is what causes the itch and welts. Some people have an overactive immune response to these proteins, leading to more severe reactions like large areas of swelling, blistering, or even a low-grade fever, a condition known as Skeeter syndrome. It's essentially an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva.
