In Luke 4:38–44, Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law and then, as the sun sets, people bring their sick to Him. He lays His hands on each one, heals them, and silences the demons who try to proclaim Him as the Son of God. Then, at dawn, He goes to a solitary place, but the people look for Him and try to keep Him from leaving — because they’ve experienced Him. They’ve encountered the real, life-changing presence of God, and they want it to remain.

That longing they felt — not wanting Him to leave — is the same longing every heart carries, whether we recognize it or not. The challenge is that in our modern, busy lives, that longing often gets buried under noise, responsibility, and distraction. But it’s still there.

Here’s how we can bring that same feeling alive in ourselves:

1. Remember that Jesus is still present — not gone.

Jesus didn’t leave the world when He ascended. He promised, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt 28:20). He’s not a figure of the past; He’s a Person who is active now — in the Eucharist, in prayer, in Scripture, in other people, in quiet nudges of conscience, in moments of grace. Just as He touched the sick then, He touches hearts now. This is not poetic language — it’s literal spiritual reality.

When you remember that, you realize the same Jesus the crowd clung to in Capernaum is walking with you now.

2. Practice recognition — train your spiritual eyesight.

Most of us don’t notice Jesus in our day-to-day lives not because He’s absent, but because we’re untrained to see Him. Like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, our eyes “are kept from recognizing Him” until our hearts are burning and our minds open.

To train this awareness, try “micro-pauses” during the day — just a breath or two to ask, “Where are You in this moment, Lord?” For example:

When a child hugs you, whisper, “Thank You, Jesus, for loving me through this.”

When a problem arises, pause: “Jesus, what are You teaching me here?”

When you see beauty (a sunrise, a laugh, a kindness), quietly name it: “That’s You.”

These small shifts help you see that He is participating — not from afar, but intimately.

3. Let gratitude stir desire.

When the people in Luke 4 wanted Jesus to stay, it was because they experienced His goodness. They had been healed. When you notice even one moment of God’s grace in a day and give thanks for it, desire grows. Gratitude is like oxygen for faith. It keeps the fire alive.

Try this: at the end of each day, ask, “Where today did I see God’s hand?” It could be in a solution that came, a person’s kindness, a sense of peace, or even in strength during difficulty. The more you notice, the more you’ll feel like those early followers: Lord, stay with me; I don’t want You to leave.

4. Let the longing move you to action.
