🎓 Does a degree still matter for career success in 2025?

When I graduated in 2008, most people told me a degree was everything, the golden key, the ticket to opportunity.

Fast forward to today, and LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence Index shows only 29% of UK professionals now see a university degree as essential. With AI changing industries and talent shortages growing, skills-first hiring is gathering pace.

Here’s what I’m seeing:

🔴 In law, degrees and pedigree still carry weight; but clients increasingly care about what lawyers can do rather than where they studied.

🔴 In legal tech and fast-growth sectors, skills are the currency. I’ve seen outstanding people land top roles through non-traditional routes, online learning, and hands-on experience.

🔴 Skills-first hiring expands the talent pool, improves diversity, and leads to better long-term hires. The data proves it, and my day-to-day experience confirms it.

My own degree gave me a base, but the things that have really moved the needle from building KC Partners, to scaling the UK’s #1 legal podcast (Legally Speaking Podcast ™️), to advising startups; came from practice, persistence, and people skills.

The winners in this AI era will be those who never stop learning, not just those who once graduated.
