We stand at the precipice of a technological shift unlike any witnessed before, driven by an accelerating development of artificial intelligence (AI) that shows no signs of slowing down due to fierce competition between countries and companies. 

The ultimate question looming over this race is not whether AI will change the world, but whether "it won't wipe us all out". 

Experts project that super intelligence—AI that is better than humans at "all things"—might arrive within 10 to 20 years, or even less. This future is highly unstable because, while some efforts have been made to ensure safety, public reports indicate that resources dedicated to safety research, such as the fraction of compute time used for it, have actually been reduced by some companies. 

The accelerating pace of AI development threatens to trigger a socioeconomic upheaval of unprecedented scale through mass joblessness and severe wealth inequality. 

While the saying goes that "A human using AI will take your job," the practical outcome for most fields is that "far fewer people" will be needed. 

For example, one person using an AI assistant to handle complaint letters can now perform the work that three people previously managed, meaning the company needs three times fewer staff. 

Industries categorised as "knowledge work," including lawyers, accountants, legal assistants, and paralegals, are deemed most at risk. This displacement will inevitably increase the gap between rich and poor, as the companies supplying and utilising AI become "much better off," while the replaced people are "worse off".
