The incredible rise of generative AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, has ushered in an era where millions seek information and even find companionship in digital entities. 

But beneath the surface of these seemingly benign interactions lies a growing concern: the potential for deep emotional bonds with AI to trigger or exacerbate psychiatric symptoms, leading to tragic consequences. 

The emergence of "AI psychosis" represents a new frontier in technology-related mental health challenges. 

This phenomenon, characterised by obsessive attachments, emotional distress, and severe breakdowns marked by delusions of AI control, highlights the profound impact these technologies can have on vulnerable individuals. 

Unlike traditional forms of technology addiction, AI psychosis involves a unique blurring of reality, where users attribute human-like qualities, intentions, and even supernatural powers to their AI companions. 

This can lead to a dangerous dependence, where individuals prioritise their AI relationships over real-world connections, neglect their physical and emotional needs, and ultimately lose touch with reality.

The question we must confront is this: Are we prepared for the mental health risks associated with increasingly sophisticated AI companions, and what safeguards must be put in place to protect the most vulnerable among us?
