1x1's are owned by the manager and are for coaching and developing your employees.

Not for the employee to own.

Here me out.

Every employee needs to see outcomes, progress, and success in their roles.

One of our jobs as people managers is to help them achieve more results, better results, new results, etc.

Show up for your employees by preparing for your 1x1's on how your reps can see results.

Don't know what to prepare? Go through an Outcomes Master Plan with each of your employees.

Here's the gist of it:
👉 What does success look like for each employee in their current role?
👉 How will you measure that success regularly (daily, weekly, etc)?
👉 What are the specific things that they need to be doing to see this success?

Build these with each one of your employees - but work together to build it.

Then document it and measure against it regularly.

In each 1x1, refer back to the master plan:
✅ What specific coaching needs to take place to hit goals?
✅ What specific skills does the employee need to learn (or unlearn)?
✅ What could they improve that will help them level up?

Everyone needs coaching.

One of the worst things you can do for your top performers is leave them alone.

This doesn't mean to micromanage them. Quite the opposite.

This is to empower them to see results in their role.

To help them to their next promotion.

So if you want to have meetings to get to know your rep, build rapport, talk about food, dogs, motorcycles (my personal fav.), hiking, etc.

Great! No one is going to stop you.

But don't do that in lieu of weekly coaching.

Your reps will thank you for it.
